Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), stated that the risk of a new war in Syria still exists and accused Turkey of playing a negative and destabilizing role in the region. In an interview with Ronahi TV, she said that many of the provisions of the January 29 agreement have not yet been implemented, warning that hate speech used by some groups within society is obstructing progress and hindering the execution of the deal.
Ahmed explained that prior to traveling to the Munich Security Conference, they held discussions with U.S. representatives. According to her, American officials informed them that meetings in Munich should be conducted jointly with the Syrian delegation. She added that they also met with the Syrian Foreign Minister and agreed on coordination and joint organization of the meetings. The invitation to attend the Munich conference, she noted, was received on short notice, and the January 29 agreement served as a foundation for the Munich discussions.
On the military front, Ahmed said armed brigades are being reorganized. She criticized the limited participation of women in Syrian government institutions, stressing that women’s involvement in all sectors should serve as a model to follow. She also highlighted the existence of joint mechanisms and achievements aimed at facilitating the return of displaced persons.
Ahmed argued that parties portraying Kurds as a threat are opposing political solutions. She accused the Turkish government of continuously attempting to undermine dialogue efforts and of pushing the region toward further conflict to prevent Kurds from obtaining their rights. She emphasized that a fundamental condition for stability is that Kurds live freely with their recognized identity on their own land. Finally, she called for clear frameworks in the field of education, support for a draft Kurdish protection law, and stronger unity and alliances to confront the current challenges facing Syria.
